Acai Bowl: The Break fast Superfruit

Title. Double click me.

I am a huge fan of breakfast because it’s the most important meal of the day and breakfast foods are delicious.  However, it’s so easy to opt for the heavy carbo-loaded choices that weigh you down and make you feel sluggish throughout the day. Over the past year or so I’ve made a switch to making smoothies most mornings and have noticed so many positive changes since, most significantly of which has been my increase in energy. Recently the breakfast smoothie has taken on the superfood form of the acai berry and the acai bowl has become quite the hot commodity in the past few months. However, purchasing them on a regular basis at roughly $6-$8 a piece can really add up, especially on a college budget!

The main ingredient in the infamous acai bowl is the acai berry (obviously) which is a super fruit loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and essential amino and fatty acids that keep you feeling healthy and strong, both inside and out. Acai bowls are incredibly refreshing, naturally sweet, and a great natural energy boost. So how could waking up to one of these in the morning not set you on track for an incredible day?!

Acai bowls are kind of like a soft and creamy sorbet that has to be eaten with a spoon and are very simple to make yourself.  The basic recipe combines acai juice, powder, or smoothie pack (I have tried them all and prefer using 100% juice or frozen smoothie packs) with a small amount of almond milk or other liquid and a mixture of your favorite frozen fruits and fresh ingredients. If you’re using the frozen smoothie packs just add liquid to the blender/NutriBullet and top with your favorite ingredients. If you have opted for the juice route, still add a little almond milk for a more creamy texture but also throw some ice in the blender to make it frozen.

The most traditional way they are eaten is with a scoop of granola, sliced fresh bananas and a drizzle of honey. However, you can personalize it to your liking by topping it with your favorite fresh fruits, or even chocolate and peanut butter. Get creative!
